About Our School
Our school is located at 3958 Chelsea, in Kansas City, Missouri. It is named after George Melcher, who was superintendent from 1928 to 1940.
- George Melcher Elementary opened its doors in 1962.
- In 1976, the school was changed from a K-7 to a school with kindergarten, fifth and sixth grades.
- In 1988, it became a foreign language magnet offering Spanish, French and German to fourth- and fifth-graders.
- Currently our school is a K-6, with two exceptional education classrooms, five support classrooms, and three auxiliary staff members.
- Bell Schedule: 9:00a.m. - 4:15p.m.
Principal - Mr. Kenneth Bridgewater
Mr. Bridgewater was born in Ankara, Turkey but grew up in the Vineyard Gardens area. He attended Sanford B. Ladd Elementary School, Meservey Elementary School, Martin Luther King, Jr. High School, and graduated from Paseo High School. He has been in education for 20 years starting as a paraprofessional, teacher, now administrator. Mr. Bridgewater says, "It is an honor to be Principal at a school in the area in which I grew up. I have always believed in giving back to the community in the manner of educating our children. With the assistance of parents and the community we wont fail. It's a new day here at Melcher Elementary School. "

Vice Principal - Dr. Laura Neighbors
Dr. Neighbors received her Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Music Vocal/Instrumental Education from Missouri Western State College. She started working at Meservey VPA in the KCMSD in 1996 as the vocal music director. In 1998 she started working on her Master's in Urban Leadership at the University of Missouri. She graduated in 2001 with her Education Specialist in Urban Leadership from the University of Missouri - Kansas City. In 2005 she began her studies in Training and Performance Improvement at the University of Capella. This past summer she graduated with her Doctorate in Training and Performance Improvement.
