Garfield Elementary was built in 1962 after a school with the same name at 421 Wabash Street was torn down the year before. The old school was a tall, brick building with a bell tower that had been in northern Kansas City since the late 1800s. Garfield Elementary School is a public school located in Kansas City, MO. It is part of the Kansas City Public Schools.
Garfield Elementary is a neighborhood school that serves students in the Northeast community. Located at 436 Prospect, Garfield has over 500 students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. It serves a very diverse community with students from more than 15 countries representing a variety of cultures. Many students receive specialized assistance through the English Language Learners program. Garfield staff teaches the curriculum as provided by KCPS. Teachers support students learning with small group instruction and practice centers. KCPS implemented the One to One initiative at Garfield during the 2014-2015 school year. Each student in grades 1 through 6 have their own laptop to use as a learning tool in the classroom. These devices remain at school at the elementary level.
Garfield focuses on the advantages of positive behavior through the Missouri Positive Behavior Intervention Support initiative. Students are encouraged to focus on what they do right as a means to success. PBIS is divided into three tiers. Garfield has successfully over the years implemented Tier 1 and has begun the steps of Tier 2. Garfield was presented the Bronze Award for Achievement and is working for Silver. The PBIS team meets bi-monthly to access and evaluate the program's success and student achievement.
Garfield has partnered with Truman Medical Center Behavioral Health to transition into a Trauma Sensitive School. School personnel can then help children overcome adversity by building resiliency.
Principal: Doug White
Doug White began his career in the Kansas City Public Schools in 1997 as an Elementary Music Teacher. He was an Assistant Principal for 5 years, became a Principal in 2007, and has been serving as the Principal at Garfield since 2010. Raised in the Kansas City area, Mr. White completed his Bachelor of Science/Music Education Degree from the University of Missouri and his Master’s Degree in School Administration from the University of Central Missouri. He has had the opportunity to work with educators throughout the state of Missouri as a participant and facilitator for several years in the Department of Education’s Leadership Academy.
Vice-Principal: Patty Jensen
Patty Jensen retired from the Lees Summit School District after 30 years. During that time she taught 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. For nine of those years, she served as a building principal at Mason Elementary. She has her Master's Degree and Education Specialist from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Mrs. Jensen and her husband have returned to the area from Chattanooga, Tennessee where she worked as an interventionist in the Hamilton County Public Schools. Mrs. Jensen enjoys being back in the Kansas City area and working at Garfield.
